Reduction of methane emissions from the energy sector
After the plenary opening, MEPs will debate draft rules to cut the methane emissions of the energy sector with Commissioner Kadri Simson. The proposal strengthens obligations to detect and repair methane leaks. MEPs also want imported coal, gas and oil to be covered by the new rules as of 2026 and want the Commission to propose reduction targets for 2030. The vote on Parliament’s negotiating mandate – ahead of discussions with the member states – will take place on Tuesday.
