State of the European Union debate
The 2026 state of the European Union debate with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen starts at 9.00. This is a key moment of accountability for the Commission towards the EU’s democratically elected representatives, fostering a more transparent and democratic Union. It allows MEPs to scrutinise the European Commission’s work and help steer EU policy.
The debate that follows von der Leyen’s address will include two rounds of statements by political group leaders, a statement by Thomas Byrne, Irish Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, on behalf of the Council presidency, two opportunities for the Commission president to respond, and the possibility for other MEPs to speak.
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney will attend the debate as a guest of honour.
Ahead of the debate, Roberta Metsola will address the media in the stand-up area by the hemicycle at 8.15.
