The deteriorating situation of media freedom and freedom of expression in Hong Kong, following the recent arrest of bookseller Leticia Wong and the sentencing of Lee Cheuk-yan and Chow Hang-tung

The resolution calls for the Council to urgently impose sanctions on the Hong Kong authorities and officials responsible for the repression of freedoms, in the framework of the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime.

In particular, Parliament denounces the application of Hong Kong’s National Security Law, in force since 2020, and the National Security Safeguarding Ordinance, in force since 2024, and demand their repeal. MEPs note that the application of both laws has led to the dismantling of freedoms in Hong Kong, in particular the freedom of expression, freedom of the media, and freedom of peaceful assembly and association. More than 400 people have been arrested and more than 180 convicted since the beginning of June 2026, according to Parliament.
